Inland Revenue and Customs to merge, shedding jobs

Readers will doubtless be sorry to learn that up to 14,000 Inland Revenue and Customs and Excise staff will lose their jobs when the Inland Revenue and Customs and Excise are merged. This merger, which has been on the cards for some time, was announced by the Chancellor in today’s Budget.

It will be interesting to see if, in time, this leads to changes in the way in which VAT inspections and employer’s PAYE compliance reviews are conducted with a single team carrying out both at once. Every small business’s worst nightmare!
