Reader argues government dictates rather than governs

This is my country. But I'm not greedy. I will share this piece of property with any other resident who lives within these watery walls.

The word 'Government' exists because of the word 'Govern', in other words 'Manage'. However, this is not the meaning of the word in the UK. The word 'Govern' actually means 'Dictate'.

The Government exists to carry out the wishes of the majority. Unfortunately every colour of Government seems to think that once they are elected, that any decision made by them is right and is what the public WANTS.

However the current administration seems to have taken this to its extreme - even in the face of the majority of people not actually wanting what they are pushing for. The £ for example. If the people (that's you and I folks) were asked "Shall we get rid of the pound?" The majority will obviously say "NO!" Now then, if getting rid of the £ is a good idea or not - that is not the point. The point is that if WE choose it to be so - then it should be so, right or wrong - that's the majority decision. Then - although this is a novel concept - the Government, then 'Governs' such that that wish is carried out for the majority.

This has never been the case, I wish it was. Now when a party gets elected - any party - 2 or 3 hundred people are spun to make a decision which a few people have concocted between them (for reasons unknown usually - aka the sleaze and kick back train), which affects about 55 - 60 million people (that's you and I again folks).

Here are a few questions (call it blame across the ages, not party specific). If you can answer 'Yes' to more than two of them, then you either work for the civil service, are a director of BIG BUSINESS, or, you are or have been a Cabinet minister. I can't answer 'Yes' to one:-

I didn't ask for the ship yards to be closed down when we had the finest ship building capability in the world - did you?

I didn't ask for the coal mines to be closed down when all of them were still viable - did you?

I didn't ask for the steel works to be closed down when British Steel was the best made in Yerp (sorry Europe), if not the world - did you?

I didn't ask for the amenities to be privatised - did you?

I didn't ask for the railway system to be privatised, and then not maintained - did you?

I don't think that I have been asked whether or not it is a good idea to privatise the postal service. Probably the only public service which works well and generates a lot of money as it stands - have you?

I haven't been asked my opinion as to whether or not the new tax changes are a good idea, even though it is me, and people like me, and not BIG BUSINESS that is affected - have you?

I was never consulted on the spending of over £1.7 billion of my (OUR) money on a big tent in London (NOT SMACK BANG IN THE MIDDLE OF THE COUNTRY SO THAT EVERYONE HAD A FAIR CHANCE OF GETTING THERE - NOT THAT ANYONE DID - YOU SOUTHERN GITS!), for one year, to celebrate the new millennium; as opposed to building millennium hospitals, hospices, care centres or disability access improvements - were you?

I haven't been asked if I want to go further into Yerp (sorry Europe) - have you?

I haven't been asked if I want a single European defence force, thus threatening our links with NATO (ok, to be blunt the USA) - have you?
