Reader argues the Revenue is too weak to target PCG members
The Revenue would never target PCG members. Just think, if ever it got out that they were doing this it would be politically explosive.
The Revenue are in a complete mess. They are putting a brave face on what is a very complex and uncertain situation. They have been severely criticised, and are very much aware that if they are seen to start throwing their weight around, with a rule book that is in a state of flux, they could be given a series of very bloody noses.
Imagine the Revenue pressing ahead screwing various contractors, for a case further down the line to undermine what had gone before. And then there is the appeal process. What would happen if potential businesses were kicked into touch, for the results of an appeal to declare that the tax was irregular. Punitive damages. Public outcry.
People give far too much credibility to the Revenue. They are in a very weak, vulnerable and confused position. Yes, they have the power to throw their weight around, but all they are prepared to do at this stage is put a brave glossy face on the whole thing, saying the law stands. Well, they are unable to implement it. The risks for them are formidable.
Internally they will be in turmoil, with all manner of 'minutes', briefing papers, and 'what if' scenarios. They deserve the mess they have been party to creating. They completely under-estimated the power and influence of the PCG. There is no way they would do anything as stupid as to specifically target PCG members. They will only move ahead on those cases that are rock-solid, simple, and clear-cut. These will be a minority, and the internal screening to identify these will be a heavy overhead.
Well done Dim. A superb mess. The only sad thing, as tax payers we are paying for it.
