Does a one-man limited company need to register for data protection

Do I need to register?

I have just received a questionnaire (forms DP1, DP2 and Appendix A) from the Data Processing Protection Corporation: Can anybody give me any advice as to whether I (as a one-man band Ltd. Co. contractor) should register? I do not want to contribute 95 quid to fund New Labour's socialist paradise, but the questions appear to cover more than simply using a computer, such as paper records.

The questions on DP1 are as follows:

1) Are you processing personal data? (This means information relating to an individual).

2) Is any of your processing on computer?

3) Are you a Data Controller? (I.e. a person who determines the purpose for which and in the manner in which any personal data are processed)

4) Are you processing personal data for any of the following purposes?

(Note: a long list ranging from accountancy/auditing to Pensions admin - omitted in entirety for brevity)

5) Are you only processing personal data for personal, family or household affairs?

6) Are you only processing personal data to maintain a public register?

On the face of it I am caught simply by using a spreadsheet to calculate my quarterly VAT, or by using the scanner to copy my completed VAT return. Rather than cough up I would rather do the whole lot on paper, but as I said before even this appears to be caught!

Since I also use the end client's computer equipment, involving the maintenance of a name and address system, will I also be caught or covered by the end client's registration? What happens if the end client isn't registered?

Final point: Will registering help to prove that my business is outside of IR35?
